Automatic update service is missing in Windows XP service manager list. Further Windows Update will not run.

Cause of the Problem:
The file wuaueng.dll is not registered in the system, this could be due to a damaged update or a virus having disabled it in the system. Some registry cleaning utilities might remove the necessary information by mistake as well.

wuaueng.dll provide the windows automatic update service in Windows XP, not having it registered in the system will cause the service to not start-up, and not show up in the services list.

Resolution/Fix:

  1. Click on the start menu and select the run option. In the run dialog box type in the following:
    regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
  2. Then press enter or the run button, afterwards you should get a dialog box notifying you that it successfully registered the dll file.
